SEO (search engine optimization) has a reputation for being complicated, expensive, and a little mysterious. For a local business, it doesn't have to be. Most of what matters comes down to one idea: make it easy for Google to understand what you do and where you do it.
Here's a plain-English starting point for businesses anywhere in East Tennessee, from Knoxville and Chattanooga to the small towns in between.
1. Say where you are, in words
Google reads text. If your website never mentions the towns you serve, Google has to guess. Don't make it guess.
Mention your city and region naturally on your key pages: "family-owned HVAC service in Maryville and Knoxville," "wedding photography in Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley," "Shih Tzu puppies in Niota, East Tennessee." Put your full address and phone number in the footer of every page if customers visit you.
Write the way your customers talk. People search for "near me," for their town, and for the problem they need solved.
2. Write a real title for every page
The page title is the blue headline people see in search results. It's one of the strongest signals you control. A good title:
- Says what the page is about
- Includes your main service and location when it fits
- Stays short enough to read at a glance
For example, "Bathroom Remodeling in Knoxville, TN | Smith & Sons" is better than "Home" or "Services."
Each page also gets a meta description, the short summary under the title in search results. Google doesn't always use it, but when it does, a clear, specific description earns more clicks.
3. Give each service its own page
If you offer five services, one page that lists all five is hard to rank. Five pages, one for each service, each with a clear title, a real description, and a call to action, give Google five chances to match a search.
If you serve several towns, a page for each main area can help too, as long as each page says something genuinely useful. Copying the same page and swapping the town name rarely works and reads poorly to real people.
4. Claim your Google Business Profile
For local searches, your Google Business Profile often shows up before regular website results. It's free. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every section: category, hours, service area, photos, and description. Then keep it current.
Sherman's Shih Tzu Puppies, a family breeder in Niota, was Desanya Studio's first build: a real website plus a verified Google Business Profile, both still managed by the studio. From May through October 2026, that profile recorded 2,186 Google Business Profile interactions (calls, messages, directions and website clicks). The website and profile support each other. Neither works as well alone.
5. Keep your name, address, and phone consistent
Your business name, address, and phone number (often called NAP) should match everywhere: your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, the chamber of commerce directory, and anywhere else you're listed. Small differences, like an old phone number or "St." on one site and "Street" on another, can create confusion. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
6. Make the site fast and phone-friendly
Many local searches happen on phones. If your site is slow, hard to tap, or makes people pinch and zoom, they'll go back and pick the next result. Compress large photos, cut unnecessary plugins and pop-ups, and test your site on your own phone over cellular data, not just office Wi-Fi.
7. Connect Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows which searches bring people to your site, which pages are indexed, and whether Google has found any problems. Set it up once, submit your sitemap, and check it monthly. It's the closest thing to Google telling you directly how it sees your site.
8. Be patient, and keep showing up
SEO isn't a switch. It's a habit. New pages, fresh photos, updated hours, and new reviews all tell Google your business is active. Steady, small improvements beat a big one-time push that's never touched again.
